What is Acid Reflux (Heartburn)?

Acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) is a debilitating condition caused by the regurgitation of liquid from the stomach into the esophagus. Over time, the lining of the esophagus can become damaged and in some cases may become inflamed. This is caused by the involuntary relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. Generally, once a person starts experiencing acid reflux, it is a condition that lasts for the lifetime of the sufferer. People who suffer with acid reflux are commonly afflicted with heartburn, regurgitation, and have trouble or pain when swallowing.

Help is available in the form of acid reflux medications such as Losec, Nexium, Pepcid, Prevacid, Prevpac, Reglan, Aciphex that can prevent and treat excessive stomach acid production, and heartburn. You can buy Zantac, a drug that can treat these conditions and is more powerful than the over-the-counter version that is commonly available in pharmacies. If you notice positive results from the use of Zantac or other medications, do not abruptly stop treatment, or the condition could reappear.
