Indications
Akne-mycin (erthromycin) is used to treat acne.

How It Works
Akne-mycin helps to reduce the incidence of acne. It is one of a group of antibiotics called macrolide antibiotics and it stops the growth of bacteria on the skin.

Dosage
Cream 4% 20 gm, erythromycin

To use Akne-mycin apply a thin layer of the medication to the skin and gently rub in, use twice a day or as directed by your doctor. Always wash your hands and the skin where you will be applying the medication beforehand. If there is no improvement in 6-8 weeks or if condition gets worse discontinue use and see your doctor again.
 
Precautions
Akne-mycin is contraindicated in people who have an allergy to Erythromycin, any of its other ingredients, penicillin or any other antibiotics. Be sure to tell your doctor your medical history before beginning treatment with Akne-mycin.

This medication is for topical use only, do not use this medication in your eyes, mouth or in any other body cavities. Do not use large amounts or apply this more often then twice a day or as your doctor recommended. Do not use for a longer period than directed. Your condition will not clear up faster, but you do raise the risk of side effects.

Antibiotics can cause fungal infections, because they get rid of "good" bacteria, let your healthcare provider know if you are prone to fungal infections.

This medicine will probably not cause harm to an unborn baby but full effects are unknown. Before taking Akne-mycin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is unknown whether Akne-mycin passes into breast milk consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Akne-mycin if you are taking: Disulfiram, Metronidazole, or Tinidazole. These drugs may increase the risk side effects and their severity.

Before using this Akne-mycin, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Akne-mycin works or might cause other unforeseen complications.

Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Akne-mycin causes minor side effects such as: burning and skin irritation. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional. Antibiotics can sometimes also cause diarrhea, this should go away on its own.

Other minor side effects have also been reported; The following are less common side effects: peeling skin, erythema, dryness, itching, and oily skin. Do not use in or around the eyes, irritation of the eyes and tenderness of the skin have also been reported with the topical use of erythromycin.

In very rare cases Akne-mycin may cause a generalized urticarial reaction, which may required systemic steroid therapy, if you are experiencing an adverse reaction to this medication call a health care professional immediately. Rarely, this medication may result in skin infections (fungal or other bacterial infections). Contact your doctor if you notice unusual skin irritations or other similar symptoms.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.

Overdose
If you suspect overdose, you can contact your local poison control center or emergency room. Peeling of the skin may be a symptom of using too much Akne-mycin, discontinue use, or consult your doctor.
