Azelex, azelaic acidChemical Namesazelaic acid Ingredients Active Ingredients: azelaic acid Non-Active Ingredients: cetearyl octanoate; glycerin; glyceryl stearate and cetearyl alcohol and cetyl palmitate and cocoglycerides; PEG-5 glyceryl stearate; propylene glycol; and purified water. Benzoic acid is present as a preservative. Indications Azelex is indicated in the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. How It Works Azelaic acid works as an acne treatment by stopping the growth of acne-causing skin bacteria, as well as by keeping skin pores clear of the dermatological detritus that can clog them and cause pimples to form. Dosage Available cream formulations: 10% 15gm, 20% 15gm Twice daily – once in the morning and once in the evening - wash and pat dry the skin, then apply a thin film of Azelex to the affected areas. Gently and thoroughly massage it into the skin, then wash your hands afterwards to make sure no Azelex is left on them. The duration of Azelex use varies from person to person depending on the severity of their acne and the rapidity of their response to treatment. While some patients may not respond at all, most Azelex users will notice a distinct improvement in their inflammatory lesions within four weeks of regular usage. Consult a doctor before taking Azelex if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Drug Interactions No significant drug interactions have been reported. Nevertheless, consult a doctor before taking Azelex if you are taking any other medications, whether they are prescription or non-prescription, herbal supplements or vitamin supplements. If you are using any other topical medications, do not apply them both at the same time to the same regions of the skin. Adverse/Side Effects Most Azelex side effects are mild and transient in nature, but if you experience any of the following to the point that they are unpleasant, or if they persist and/or worsen, notify your doctor: pruritius (itching), burning, stinging and tingling upon application of the medication, erythema (redness), dryness, rash, peeling skin, irritation, dermatitis, and contact dermatitis. Rare yet severe side effects include worsening of asthma, vitiligo depigmentation, hypertrichosis, keratosis pilaris, and exacerbation of herpes labialis. Overdose Symptoms of overdose are unknown. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Storage Instructions Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets. |
