Indications
Minocin is used to treat acne as well as many other types of infections randing from Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, rickettsial pox and Lymphogranuloma venereum.
How It Works
Minocin is a broad spectrum tetracycline antibiotic, and a bacteriostatic antibiotic. It is lipid-soluble of the tetracycline-class antibiotics, giving it the greatest penetration into the prostate and brain.
Dosage
Tablets (100 mg)
The recommended initial dose of Minocin is 200 mg initially followed by 100 mg every 12 hours.
For the treatment of meningococcal carrier state:
100 mg every 12 hours for 5 days.
Mycobacterium marinum infections:
100 mg every 12 hours for 6 to 8 weeks have been used successfully in a limited number of cases.
Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new yeast infection.
Uncomplicated urethral, endocervical, or rectal infection in adults caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Ureaplasma urealyticum: 100 mg, orally, every 12 hours for at least 7 days.
For uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis in men:
100 mg twice a day orally for five days is recommended.
Gonorrhea patients sensitive to penicillin may be treated with Minocin, administered as 200 mg initially, followed by 100 mg every 12 hours for a minimum of 4 days.
Precautions
Minocin is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Minocin and tetracyclines.
Taking this medication might increase nitrogen in the blood in the form of urea.
Speak to a doctor if you have the following conditions: Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea has been reported in use with all antibacterial agents. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon leading to overgrowth of C. difficile.
Taking Minocin might lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms like fungi.
This medicine will cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Minocin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Minocin passes into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding a baby.
You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to Minocycline or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Minocin.
Oral minocycline is not indicated for the treatment of meningococcal infection.
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Minocin if you are taking acitretin, isotretinoin, tretinoin, digoxin, live bacterial vaccines, penicillins, warfarin.

Adverse/Side Effects

Infrequent side effects may include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, stomatitis, glossitis, dysphagia, hyperbilirubinemia, hepatic cholestasis, increase in liver enzymes, fatal hepatic failure, jaundice, hepatitis including autoimmune hepatitis and liver failure enamel hypoplasia, enterocolitis, pseudomembranous colitis, pancreatitis, inflammatory lesions, vulvovaginitis, cough, dyspnea, bronchospasm, exacerbation of asthma, and pneumonitis. Convulsions, dizziness, hypesthesia, paresthesia, sedation, and vertigo.
If any of these side effects become bothersome, seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose are dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
