Disulfiram

Ingredients

Indications
Antabuse is indicated in the treatment of chronic alcoholism.

How It Works
Alcohol is normally metabolized in the liver from alcohol to acetaldehyde, and then on to the harmless acetic acid (vinegar).  Antabuse interrupts this process, preventing acetaldehyde from be turned to acetic acid.  Acetaldehyde is responsible for many of the unpleasant symptoms of hangover; disulfiram ensures that a single drink produces a hangover effect 5 to 10 times worse than it would otherwise, and that this sensation is felt within minutes of consuming alcohol. Taking disulfiram makes drinking alcohol highly unpleasant.
