Lioresal, baclofenChemical NamesBaclofen Ingredients Active Ingredients: baclofen Non-Active Ingredients: Cellulose compounds, magnesium stearate, povidone, and starch. Indications Baclofen is used for treating spasm of skeletal muscles, muscle clonus, rigidity, and pain caused by disorders such as multiple sclerosis. It is also injected into the spinal cord (intrathecal) for management of severe spasticity. How It Works Baclofen is a medication that relaxes skeletal muscles, the muscles that move the skeleton (and also called striated muscle). Chemically, baclofen is related to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a naturally-occurring neurotransmitter in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that nerves use to communicate with one another. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 10 mg, 25 mg The usual starting dose of oral baclofen for adults is 5 mg given three times daily. Based on the response, the dose can be increased by 15 mg every three days to a maximum of 80 mg/day in divided doses. Do not abruptly start or stop taking baclofen without a doctor’s consultation. Abrupt discontinuation of oral baclofen may cause seizures and hallucinations. Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: diabetes, kidney problems, seizures, mental/emotional problems, brain disorders (e.g., stroke), ulcers, allergies (especially drug allergies). Because this drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness, use caution when driving or performing tasks that require alertness. Limit alcohol consumption as it may increase the drowsiness or dizziness effects of this drug. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug. Consult a physician on the risks if you are pregnant Baclofen can be detected in the breast milk of mothers taking oral baclofen. Drug Interactions There is a risk when using baclofen with other drugs that the combination may lead to additional reduction in brain function. In addition to the risk of depressing brain function, the use of baclofen and tricyclic antidepressants (for example, amitriptyline [Elavil, Endep], doxepin [Sinequan, Adapin]) together may cause muscle weakness. Use of baclofen and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs - for example, phenelzine) can result in greater depression of brain function as well as low blood pressure. Because baclofen can increase blood sugar, doses of antidiabetic drugs may need to be adjusted when baclofen is begun. Adverse/Side Effects Baclofen may cause drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, headache, seizures, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, constipation, confusion, respiratory depression, inability to sleep, and increased urinary frequency or urinary retention. More serious side effects include: mental/mood changes, seizures, vision changes, muscle stiffness, stomach pain, vomiting, trouble breathing, painful urination, change in urine amount, impotence, chest pain, black stools, fainting, unsteadiness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Possible dose-related increase in the incidence of ovarian cysts has been found by palpation in about 4% of the multiple sclerosis patients that were treated with Lioresal. Overdose Symptoms of overdose include vomiting, muscle weakness, drowsiness, slow breathing, and seizures. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Storage Instructions Baclofen should be stored between 15 C (59 F) and 30 C (86 F), out of reach of children and pets. |
