Claritin, loratadine
Chemical Name
Loratadine
Ingredients
Active ingredients: Loratadine
Oral Tablets:
Non active: corn starch, lactose, and magnesium stearate
Indications
Claritin provides effective relief from seasonal allergy symptoms caused by airborne pollens from trees, grass and weeds. It is also effective in relieving the symptoms of ongoing itching and hives of unknown cause.
Also it is indicated for the treatment of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis due to dust mites, animal dander, molds allergens and chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 6 months of age and older.
How It Works
Claritin works by blocking the histamine released by your body's immune system, thus relieving some of your seasonal allergy symptoms.
Unlike all over-the-counter and some prescription antihistamines (which can make people drowsy), it has no drowsy side effects so you feel better, not medicated.
Dosage
Tablets (10 mg)
For Adults and Children 12 Years and Older:
The recommended initial dose of Claritin is one (10 mg) pill per day.
For Children 6 to 11 Years:
The recommended dosage is half a pill (5 mg) once daily depending on symptom severity.
Precautions
Claritin is contraindicated in those patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or any of its ingredients. Be careful when taking Claritin if you are doing activities that require mental alertness. The safety and effectiveness of loratadine in pediatric patients under the age of 6 months has not been established.
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Woman who are pregnant or think they might become pregnant should speak with a physician before they take Claritin. Claritin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Loratadine has been reported to be excreted in human breast milk.
Drug Interactions
When taking loratadine with theophylline the dose of theophylline may need to be reduced.
No clinically significant drug interactions have been found with theophylline at a low dose, azithromycin, pseudoephedrine, ketoconazole, or erythromycin. There was a small decrease in the clearance of loratadine caused by a 400-mg dose of theophylline; it is possible that larger theophylline doses could have a greater effect.
Before using this Claritin, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Claritin works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
