Entocort EC, budesonide

Chemical Names
budesonide

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: budesonide
Non-Active Ingredients: ethylcellulose, acetyltributyl citrate, methacrylic acid copolymer type C, triethyl citrate, antifoam M, polysorbate 80, talc, and sugar spheres. The capsule shells have the following inactive ingredients: gelatin, iron oxide, and titanium dioxide.

Indications
Entocort EC is indicated in the treatment of Crohn’s disease affecting the ileum or the ascending colon.

How It Works
Enterocort EC is a glucorticoid, a synthetic steroid with a powerful anti-inflammatory profile. When ingested orally, these effects manifest primarily in the colon and gastrointestinal system, reducing the inflammation characteristic of Crohn's disease

Dosage
Available caplet sizes: 3 mg

The recommended adult dosage for the treatment of mild to moderate active Crohn's disease involving the ileum and/or the ascending colon is 9 mg taken once daily in the morning for up to 8 weeks. Recurring episodes of active disease can be treated again with the same.

Once the symptoms are controlled, single daily doses of 6 mg are recommended for the next 3 months for the prevention of clinical remissions.

Patients with mild to moderate active Crohn's disease involving the ileum and/or ascending colon have been switched from oral prednisolone to Entocort EC with no reported episodes of adrenal insufficiency. Since prednisolone should not be stopped abruptly, tapering should begin concomitantly by initiating Entocort EC treatment.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Entocort EC if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of tuberculosis, liver disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, stomach problems, eye problems, or allergies.

Avoid contact with people infected with chickenpox or measles while taking Entocort EC.

Emotional stress, serious infection, injury or surgery may increase your body’s need for steroids like Entocort EC.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Entocort EC if you are taking ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, erythromycin, grapefruit juice, cimetidine, clarithromycin, rifampin, or mifepristone.
