Indications Locoid cream is used to treat a variety of skin conditions (eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash). Hydrocortisone reduces swelling, itching, and redness that is affecting the skin. This medication is a medium-strength corticosteroid. Cortef tablets are used to treat a variety of conditions such as: adrenocortical insufficiency, arthritis, allergic reactions/disorders, multiple sclerosis, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, lupus, psoriasis, keratitis, ocular swelling conditions or breathing disorders. How It Works Hydrocortisone is considered a steroid medication. Hydrocortisone prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Dosage Cream (Locoid Lipocream 1% 15gm, hydrocortisone) Tablets (Cortef 20 mg, hydrocortisone) Locoid Lipocream Before applying the cream to affected skin area wash and dry your hands and the area. Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area and gently rub in. You should apply this cream 2-3 times per day as recommended by your doctor. Do not cover the area with a bandage, or wrap unless directed to do so by your doctor. After use wash your hands (unless you are using this medication on your hands). Avoid getting this medication in the eyes, nose, mouth or genitals. If you get the medication in these areas, rinse with plenty of water. The initial dosage of Cortef tablets vary from 20 mg to 240 mg per day depending on the specific disease or condition being treated. In most situations a lower dose will generally suffice while in selected patients (for severe or chronic conditions) higher initial doses may be required. The initial dosage should be maintained or adjusted until a satisfactory response is noted. If condition does not improve after a week or two Cortef should be discontinued and the patient transferred to another therapy. In the treatment of multiple sclerosis, daily doses of 200 mg of Hydrocortisone for a week followed by 80 mg every other day for 1 month have been shown to be effective. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people who are using steroid medication.
