Indications
Indocin  is used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, including acute flares of chronic disease, moderate to severe ankylosing spondylitis, moderate to severe osteoarthritis, acute painful shoulder (bursitis and/or tendinitis), and acute gouty arthritis.

How It Works
Indomethacin is a nonselective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2, enzymes that participate in prostaglandin synthesis from arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins are found in the body, where they have a wide variety of effects, some of which lead to pain, fever, and inflammation.

Dosage
Capsules (25mg, 50mg, 75mg)

Initial dose is 25mg twice a day or three times a day. If this is well tolerated, increase the daily dosage by 25 or by 50mg,

In special cases of acute flares of chronic rheumatoid arthritis, it may be necessary to increase the dosage by 25mg or, if required, by 50mg daily.

Acute painful shoulder (bursitis and/or tendinitis):

Initial Dose is 75-150mg daily in three or four divided doses.

Acute gouty arthritis:
Suggested initial dose is 50mg three times a day until pain has subsided, after which the patient should rapidly reduce dosage.

Precautions
Indocin is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Indocin, aspirin and NSAIDs.

Speak to a doctor if you have the following conditions: severe kidney disease, recent heart bypass surgery, liver disease, poorly controlled diabetes, stomach/intestine/esophagus problems, heart disease, blood disorders (e.g., anemia), Parkinson's disease, high level of potassium in the blood, asthma, growths in the nose bleeding or clotting problems, high blood pressure, swelling a severe loss of body water, stroke, mental or mood conditions , seizures, ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding.

Ordinarily, Indocin should not be prescribed for pediatric patients 14 years of age and under.

Taking Indocin may result in serious and dangerous cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction and stroke. Patients prone to these kind of risks should be monitored at all time while on this medication. The lowest effective dose should be used.

This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Indocin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Indocin passes into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

Using NSAIDs 10-14 days following cardio artery bypass surgery was found to increase the chance of a heart attack and stroke. Extreme caution must be used.

In some cases, this drug can actually worsen hypertension condition. Blood pressure should be monitored periodically while on this medication.

Some patients taking Indocin has experienced fluid retention and fluid retention and edema.

Taking this drug increases the chance of congestive heart failure.

There have been cases of corneal deposits and retinal disturbances when taking Indocin. Use with caution and any noticeable change in vision should warrant a visit to the doctor.

Indocin can aggravate the Central Nervous System (CNS) and can make depression, along with psychological disorders, worsen.

Patients with liver or kidney dysfunction should be monitored by a doctor.

Anemia is observed in patients talking Indocin

Patients with preexisting asthma condition should be warned that Indocin may cause a bronchospasm condition that may be fatal.

Indocin, like other NSAIDs, can cause serious skin side effects such as exfoliative dermatitis. If you notice signs of skin problems, tell you doctor immediately.

Patients should promptly report signs or symptoms of unexplained weight gain or edema to their physicians.

Patients should be informed of the warning signs and symptoms of hepatotoxicity (e.g., nausea, fatigue, lethargy, pruritus, jaundice, right upper quadrant tenderness, and "flu-like" symptoms). If this occurs tell you doctor immediately.

Adverse/Side Effects

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
