Non-Active Ingredients: lactose, citric acid, USP; D&C yellow No. 10; FD&C blue No. 1; FD&C red No. 3; FD&C yellow No. 6; gelatin, glycerol monooleate, silicon dioxide, sodium benzoate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and titanium dioxide.
Indications
Ponstel is indicated to work in the relief of pain for patients 14 years of age or older. Generally indicated to work best when experiencing mild to moderate discomfort, the therapy should not exceed one week. It has also been indicated as a treatment of rheumatoid arthritis as well as primary dysmenorrhea, a gynecological condition in which severe uterine pain is experienced during a period of menstruation.
How It Works
Ponstel is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. To relieve pain experienced during menstrual cycles, it decreases inflammation and lowers the instances of uterine contractions. The mechanism is, as yet, unknown.
Dosage
Tablets, Capsules (250mg, 500mg)
The initial dosage is 500 mg of mefenamic acid three times daily. The dosage may be reduced to 1 capsule (250 mg) three times daily. This medication should be taken with food.
Precautions
Ponstel is contraindicated for patients with allergies or hypersensitive conditions to Mefenamic acid. It should not be used by patients who suffer from asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. Although rare, severe, anaphylactic reactions to NSAIDs have been reported in some patients.
This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Ponstel, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Ponstel passes into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to Mefenamic acid or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Ponstel.
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Ponstel, if you are taking: ACE-inhibitors, Aspirin, Diuretics, Lithium, Methotrexate, Warfarin, Antacids.
Before using this Ponstel, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Ponstel works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
Adverse/Side Effects
Ponstel may cause the following side effects: gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, skin rash, weight gain, or edema. It may also result in hepatotoxicity (e.g., nausea, fatigue, lethargy, pruritus, jaundice, right upper quadrant tenderness, and "flu-like" symptoms). If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.
If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose include severe stomach pain in the stomach, coffee ground-like vomit, dark stool, slow or shallow breathing, ringing in the ears, change in amount of urine, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, muscle weakness, confusion, severe headache or loss of consciousness.
