Bactroban, mupirocinChemical Namesmupirocin Ingredients Active Ingredients: mupirocin Non-Active Ingredients: polyethylene glycol ointment Indications Bactroban is indicated in the treatment of bacterial skin infections, including furuncle and impetigo. It is a topical cream, and will not conflict with any oral medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements. How It Works Mupirocin is an antibiotic, a combination of several pseudomonic acids – primarily pseudomonic acid A – that is bacteriostatic at low concentrations and bactericidal at higher concentrations. It inhibits RNA synthesis in Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, either stopping them from growing (at low concentrations) or killing them (at high concentrations) and curing the infections they are responsible for. Dosage Available cream formulations: topical 2%, nasal 2% A small amount of Bactroban should be applied to the affected area three times daily. The area treated may be covered with a gauze dressing if desired. Patients not showing a clinical response within 3 to 5 days should be re-evaluated. Consult a doctor before taking Bactroban if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of impaired kidney function, as Bactroban can be absorbed through wounds and excreted through the renal system. Do not use Bactroban for treating ophthalmic (eye-based) infections. It is a topical antibiotic only. Do not use regular Bactroban for nasal muscosal infections – use nasal formulation Bactroban instead. Prolonged usage of Bactroban may result in increased growth of unaffected organisms, such as fungi. Drug Interactions Bactroban does not have any known drug interactions. Do not use Bactroban simultaneously with other topical antibiotics or treatments. Adverse/Side Effects Local adverse reactions to Bactroban include burning, stinging, pain, rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate. Overdose There are no known symptoms of Bactroban overdose. If you suspect overdose, or if you swallow Bactroban, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Storage Instructions Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets. |
