Chemical Names
cefaclor

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: cefaclor
Non-Active Ingredients: cornstarch, F D & C Blue No. 1, F D & C Red No. 40, gelatin, magnesium stearate, silicone, titanium dioxide, iron oxide (500 mg format only)

Indications
Ceclor is indicated in the treatment of ear infections, respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. Ceclor treats infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococci bacteria, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and H. influenze.

How It Works
Ceclor is a cephalosporin antibiotic, a category of antibiotics that are Cephalosporins are bactericidal (as opposed to bacteriostatic) and have the same mode of action as other beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins) but are less susceptible to bacterial defenses. Cephalosporins disrupt the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls. The peptidoglycan layer is important for cell wall structural integrity.

Dosage
Available tablet sizes: 250 mg, 500 mg
Available extended-release tablet sizes: 375 mg

Adults:
The usual adult dosage is 250 mg every 8 to 12 hours. The maximum recommended daily dosage is 2 g (2000 mg). For lower respiratory tract infections, the daily dose should always be administered in divided doses 3 times daily. Most infections are treated with a 7 day regimen, though infections due to S. pyogenes and S. aureus (usually pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and skin and skin structure infections) usually take 10 days.

Children: The usual dosage for children is 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 to 12 hours. For more serious infections, otitis media (ear infection), and infections caused by less susceptible organisms, 40 mg/kg/day up to a maximum of 1 g (1000 mg) per day is acceptable.

Extended release:
Extended release tablets should always be taken twice daily, not three times daily.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Ceclor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of kidney disease or intestinal disease.

Patients should be carefully screened for cephalosporin hypersensitivity before taking. If an allergic reaction occurs, discontinue the drug immediately. Serious acute hypersensitivity may require drastic antiallergic intervention.

Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents, including cefaclor, and has ranged in severity from mild to life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to consider this diagnosis in patients who present with diarrhea subsequent to the administration of antibacterial agents.

Prescribing Ceclor in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria. Prolonged use of Ceclor may result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms.

Cephalosporin antibiotics may cause a false positive on certain urine tests for glucose.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Ceclor if you are taking live vaccines, probenecid, warfarin, other antibiotics, or birth control pills.

Adverse/Side Effects
Common side effects include stomach upset, headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, new signs of infection (e.g., persistent sore throat or fever), easy bruising/bleeding, change in the amount of urine.

This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to resistant bacteria. This condition may occur while receiving therapy or even weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because such products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.

A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, unusual joint pain, trouble breathing.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe vomiting and seizures. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
