How It Works
Ceftin is part of the family of cephalosporin antibiotics. Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic intended for oral administration. It works by fighting bacteria in your body by inhibiting the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Cefuroxime is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections, including severe or life-threatening forms. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Dosage
Ceftin is available as tablets in 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg formats.
Ceftin is also available as a 750 mg injection for use in particular circumstances.
Ceftin should be taken with food to increase body absorption.
Dosage for different conditions are:
Pharyngitis/tonsillitis, 250 mg twice/day for 10 days
Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, 250 mg twice/day for 10 days
Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, 250 or 500 mg twice/day for 10 days
Secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis, 250 or 500 mg twice/day for 5-10 days
Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections, 250 or 500 mg twice/day for 10 days
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections, 250 mg twice/day for 7-10 days
Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1,000 mg once as a single dose
Early Lyme disease, 500 mg twice/day for 20 days
For children the recommended dosage is 250 mg /twice a day for 10 days. Ceftin is most often prescribed to children for inner ear infections or sinus infections.

If you miss a dose take the medication as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Precautions
Before taking cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to penicillin or other cephalosporins or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially known: kidney disease, or stomach/intestinal disease. Cefuroxime axetil, as with other broad-spectrum antibiotics, should be prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of colitis. The safety and effectiveness of cefuroxime axetil have not been established in patients with gastrointestinal malabsorption

Caution is advised if you have diabetes. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely. This medication is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, older adults may be at greater risk for side effects while using this drug. Broad-spectrum antibiotics should be prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis. During pregnancy, this medication should not cause harm to an unborn fetus. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Ceftin if you are taking a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin), metformin (Fortamet, Glucophage, Riomet, Actoplus, Avandamet, Metaglip) or probenecid (Benemid). Antacids or medication that reduces stomach acidity may effect how cefuroxime works or increase possible side effects.

Before taking cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or to penicillins or other cephalosporins or if you have any other allergies.
Taking Ceftin while on birth control can render birth control pills less effective and may lead to pregnancy. Consult with a doctor if mixing these two medications and/or practice other forms of birth control.

Possible mild side effects include: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, mild diarrhea, gas, upset stomach; cough, stuffy nose; stiff or tight muscles, muscle pain; joint pain or swelling; headache, drowsiness; feeling restless, irritable, or hyperactive; white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth; diaper rash in an infant taking liquid cefuroxime; mild itching or skin rash; or vaginal itching or discharge.

If any of these more serious side effects occur contact a doctor: diarrhea that is watery or bloody; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats; unusual bleeding; blood in your urine; seizure (convulsions); pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness; jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness; increased thirst, loss of appetite, swelling, weight gain, feeling short of breath; or painful or difficult urination, urinating less than usual or not at all. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to cefuroxime, or to similar antibiotics, such as Cefzil, Keflex, Omnicef, and others.
Overdose
Symptoms of oral overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. If other symptoms are present, it is probably secondary to an underlying disease state, an allergic reaction, or toxicity due to ingestion of a second medication.
If an overdose is suspected contact your local Poison Control Center. Protect the patient's airway and support ventilation and perfusion. Meticulously monitor and maintain, within acceptable limits, the patient's vital signs, blood gases, serum electrolytes, etc. Absorption of drugs from the gastrointestinal tract may be decreased by giving activated charcoal, which, in many cases, is more effective than emesis or lavage; consider charcoal instead of or in addition to gastric emptying.
