Initial dosage for serious infections: 150 to 300 mg every 6 hours.Contraindications: Cleocin is contraindicated in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis. Clindamycin is also indicated for serious respiratory tract infections (empyma), anaerobic pneumonitis and lung abscess; serious skin and soft tissue infections; septicemia intra-abdominal infections such as peritonitis and intra-abdominal abscess (typically resulting from anaerobic organisms resident in the normal gastrointestinal tract); infections of the female pelvis and genital tract such as endometritis, nongonococcal tuboovarian abscess, pelvic cellulitis and post-surgical vaginal cuff infection.
Clindamycin oral solution is indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, including infections caused by stretococci, pneumococci and staphylocci.
How It Works
Clindamycin is bacterial static protein synthesis inhibitor that works by inhibiting ribosomal translocation in a similar way to marcrolides. It does so by binding preferentially to the 23S rRNA of the large bacterial ribosome subunit, preventing the bacterias continued growth.

Precautions
Cleocin (general)
Cleocin is contraindicated in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis. Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including Cleocin HCL, and may range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Orally and piercing administered Clindamycin has been associated with severe colitis that may result in death. Older patients with associated severe illness may not tolerate diarrhea associated with medication. When Clindamycin is indicated in these patients, they should be carefully monitored for change in bowel frequency. If significant diarrhea takes place this medication should be discontinued. Cllindamycin should not be used in the treatment of meningitis.
The use of Cleocin HCI occasionally results in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms— particularly yeasts. Should super-infections occur, appropriate measures should be taken as indicated by the clinical situation.
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant speak to your doctor. Cleocin is not recommended if you are breastfeeding as the medication may pass into breast milk.
Gel:
Use of the topical formulation of clindamycin results in absorption of the antibiotic from the skin surface. Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and colitis may occur. Cleocin T Topical Solution contains an alcohol base, which will cause burning and irritation of the eye. In the event of accidental contact with sensitive surfaces (eye, abraded skin, mucous membranes), bathe with copious amounts of cool tap water. The solution has an unpleasant taste and caution should be exercised when applying medication around the mouth. Cleocin T should be prescribed with caution inatopic individuals.
Cleocin Oral Solution:
Oral solution: Cleocin is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to preparations containing clindamycin and lincomycin.
