Flagyl, metronidazoleChemical Namesmetronidazole Ingredients Active Ingredients: metronidazole Non-Active Ingredients: cellulose, FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, stearic acid, and titanium dioxide Indications Flagyl is indicated in the treatment of abdominal infections, bone infections, joint infections, nervous system infections, respiratory tract infections, skin infections, intestinal infections, vaginal infections, liver infections, venereal disease, amebiasis, endocarditis, and blood infections. How It Works Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic which is taken up into bacterial DNA and forms unstable molecules. This function only occurs when metronidazole is partially reduced, and because this reduction usually happens only in anaerobic cells, it has relatively little effect upon human cells or aerobic bacteria. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 200 mg, 400 mg Standard dosage regimens for various bacterial and parasitic infections are: Amebic dysentery: 750 mg orally 3 times daily for 5-10 days. Amebic liver abscess: 500-750 mg orally three times daily for 5-10 days. Anaerobic infections: 7.5 mg/kg orally every 6 hours not to exceed 4 grams daily. Clostridium difficile infection: 250-500 mg orally 4 times daily or 500-750 orally 3 times daily. Giardia: 250 mg orally three times daily for 5 days. Helicobacter pylori: 800-1500 mg orally daily for several days in combination with other drugs. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): 500 mg orally twice daily for 14 days in combination. Trichomoniasis: 2 g single dose or 1 g twice Metronidazole may be taken orally with or without food, though food or a full glass of water or milk can prevent stomach upset. The liver is primarily responsible for eliminating metronidazole from the body, and doses may need to be reduced in patients with liver disease and abnormal liver function. Consult a doctor before taking Flagyl if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of liver problems, seizure disorders, any allergies, or HIV/AIDS. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection). Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Flagyl if you are taking alcohol, warfarin, cimetidine, cholestyramine, amprenavir, carbamazepine, lithium, cyclosporine, phenytoin, phenobarbitol, disulfiram, or anything containing propylene glycol.
