Ilosone, erythromycinChemical NameErythromycin Ingredients Active Ingredients: Erythromycin Non-Active Ingredients: White Petrolatum, mineral Oil Indications Ilosone (erthromycin) is used to treat many bacterial infections including those of ears, throat, and eyes, lower and upper respiratory tract, whooping cough, urinary tract infections, listeriosis and heart infections. Ilosone is also used to treat sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as Syphilis and Gonorrhea as well as rheumatic fever, and bacterial endocarditis. Ilosone is used especially when patients are allergic or sensitive to sulfa drugs or penicillin. How It Works Ilosone is part of a group of antibiotics called macrolide antibiotics, its antimicrobial spectrum is similar or slightly larger than penicillin. Erthromycin interferes with a bacteria's production of useful proteins which is the basis of its antimicrobial action. Dosage Tablets (250 mg, 500 mg) Initial dosage for someone weighing less then 175 lbs (80 kg) is 250 mg four times per day, or 500 mg twice per day. For patients heavier then 80 kg, the recommended dose is double (500 mg 4 times per day, or 1000 mg twice per day). The total daily dosage should never exceed 4g per day. Children under the age of 12 should be give 15-25 mg per pound of body weight, not exceeding the adult dosage. For most conditions treatment should be continued for 10 days. Precautions Ilosone is contraindicated in people who have an allergy to Erythromycin, or any of its other ingredients and in patients with liver failure. Antibiotics (erythromycin) can disrupt the normal bacteria cycle in the digestive tract, allowing undesirable bacteria to grow sometimes causing diarrhea or if severe pseudomembranous colitis. Watch for signs of this problem, such as bloody stool or severe diarrhea. Antibiotics can cause yeast infections, because they get rid of "good" bacteria, let your healthcare provider know if you are prone to yeast infections or other fungal infections. There is the slight chance that Erythromycin may worsen or, in very rare cases cause myasthenia gravis, the loss of control or sagging of muscles in the face). This medicine will probably not cause harm to an unborn baby but full effects are unknown. Before taking Ilosone, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Ilosone passes into breast milk but it is unknown whether it causes harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby. If you experience any of these less common but serious side effects contact you doctor immediately: bloody stools, severe diarrhea, decreased hearing or hearing loss, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, seizures, stomach pain/cramps, or symptoms of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, black or pale stools, dark urine, severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite). If you experience any of these rare and very serious side effects contact a healthcare professional or doctor immediately: symptoms of myasthenia gravis (droopy eyelids, blurry or double vision, muscle weakness or failure). A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
