Indications
Lopid is used with proper diet to treat type-2 diabetes.

Reducing the risk of developing coronary heart disease only in Type II patients without history of or symptoms of existing coronary heart disease who have had an inadequate response to weight loss, dietary therapy, exercise, and other pharmacologic agents (such as bile acid sequestrates and nicotinic acid, known to reduce LDL- and raise HDL-cholesterol) and who have the following triad of lipid abnormalities: low HDL-cholesterol levels in addition to elevated LDL-cholesterol and elevated triglycerides

Hyperlipidaemia is the condition of abnormally elevated levels of any or all lipids and/or lipoproteins in the blood.

Hypertriglyceridemia denotes high (hyper-) blood levels (-emia) of triglycerides, the most abundant fatty molecule in most organisms.

How It Works
Gemfibrozil is a blood lipid and cholesterol-modifying medicine. It is classified as a fibric acid derivative similar to Fenofibrate (Tricor). It reduces triglycerides and increases cholesterol carried in High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in the blood.

Dosage
Tablets (300 mg, 600 mg)

Precautions
Lopid is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Lopid, kidney or liver dysfunction, including primary biliary cirrhosis, a pre-existing gallbladder condition and combination therapy with Repaglinide and Itraconazole.

Lopid should only be administered for the indications listed above. If Lopid response is inadequate after three months the drug should be discontinued.

There is also the possibility, however rare, of severe anemia, a decrease of white blood cells, and bone marrow hypoplasia, which have been reported while on this medication. Abnormal live function has been reported while on this drug, if you experience any noticeable changes report them to your doctor immediately.
The worsening of kidney function has also been reported.

Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Lopid causes the following minor side effects: stomach upset, stomach/abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, unusual taste, numbness/tingling of hands/feet, or blurred vision. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.

Infrequent side effects include decreased sexual desire or ability, and depression.

Rare side effects may be dangerous and you should consult your doctor if you experience any of the following: fever, persistent sore throat, easy bruising/bleeding, unusual fatigue, irregular heartbeat, the possibility of the rapid destruction of skeletal muscle resulting in leakage into the urine of the muscle protein, gallstones, gallbladder disease requiring surgery.

If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.

Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
