Indications
Tablets: Maxaquin is indicated in the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It is used to treat acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, complicated urinary tract infections, prophylaxis of urinary tract infection following trans-urethral surgery and other bacterial infections.
Eye Drops: Maxaquin is indicated in the treatment of bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis, pink-eye, and others. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How It Works
Maxaquin is member of ther fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by killing sensitive bacteria by stopping the production of essential proteins that the bacteria need to survive and reproduce.
Dosage
(Maxaquin Tablets 400 mg)

Tablets:
Maxaquin is taken once daily with a glass of water and is taken for different lengths of time depending on condition being treated.
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 400mg once daily for threee days.
Complicated urinary tract infection: 400mg once daily for 10-14 days.
Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400mg once daily for seven to 10 days.
Prophylaxis of urinary tract infection following trans-urethral surgery: 400mg take a single dose two to six hours prior to surgery.
Eye Drops: Always wash your hands before applying eye drops. The recommended dosage is 1-2 drops of Maxaquin ophthalmic solution in the affected eye three times a day.
To apply tilt your head back slightly and pull down on the lower eyelid. Hold the dropper above the eye with the dropper tip down. Look up and away from the dropper. Squeeze out a drop and close your eye. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for about a minute to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
Precautions
Before using lomefloxacin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Maxaquin, or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, heart problems, seizures, epilepsy, high blood pressure or a sensitivity to the sun. You may need a dose adjustment or may not be able to take Maxaquin if you have Alzheimer disease, a CNS disease, hardening of the arteries in the brain, a history of seizures, or increased pressure in the head.
Lomefloxacin may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, tanning lights, or other sources of bright light; severe sunburn may result. Avoid exposure to both direct and indirect sunlight for a few days during and after treatment. If you experience severe burning, redness, itching, swelling, or blistering of the skin, contact your doctor.
If you develop a new eye infection, eye injury, or have eye surgery, check with your doctor about whether you should continue to use lomefloxacin. You may be advised to start using a new bottle or to stop treatment altogether.
Your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug. Do not drive, use machinery, or do activities that requires clear vision until you are sure you can see properly.
Do not use this medication while wearing contact lenses. This medication can be absorbed by contact lenses. You should wait at least 15 minutes after using Maxaquin drops before putting your contact lenses back in.
Do not allow the dropper to become contaminated by touching household surfaces, or eyes and hands. If the dropper becomes contaminated it could cause an infection in your eye, which can lead to vision loss or serious eye damage.
Do not use any other eye medication unless your doctor has prescribed it for you. If you use another eye medication, use it at least 10 minutes before or after using lomefloxacin ophthalmic. Do not use the medications at the same time.
Consult a doctor before taking Maxaquin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast feeding as it is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk.
Drug Interactions
Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor first. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and non-prescription, including herbal products that you may use. Consult a doctor before taking Maxaquin if you are taking droperidol, cimetidine, probenecid, cyclosporine, insulin or an oral diabetes medication such as glipizide, foscarnet, glyburide or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Do not receive a Typhoid live vaccine while using this medication because its effectiveness may be decreased by Maxaquin. Also be aware that taking sucralfate, antacids containing magnesium or aluminium and metal cations as mineral supplements may affect the absorption of Maxaquin and should not be taken within 2 hours of taking Maxaquin.
Eye Drops: Advise your doctor if you are using any other eye drops, or ocular medications.
Adverse/Side Effects
Normal side effects include: headache, nausea, phototoxicity, dizziness, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The eye drops may cause temporary blurred vision, temporary burning/stinging or itching/redness of the eye, watery eyes, dry eyes, dry mouth, sensitivity of eyes to light, bitter taste, weakness, nausea, or headache. If any of these effects persist, worsen or become overly bothersome notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these rare but serious side effects: vision changes, ringing in the ears, signs of a kidney stone (pain in the back/side/abdomen, nausea/vomiting, blood in the urine), yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, unusual tiredness or weakness, sensitivity to sunlight, or signs of infection (fever, chills, persistent sore throat).
Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: seizures, confusion or hallucinations, liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue) or muscle or joint pain. If using the eye drops consult a doctor if you experience the following serious side effects: persistent eye redness or discharge, eye or eyelid swelling, eye pain.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention you are experiencing an allergic reaction. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose include seizures.
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
