Indications

Mevacor is indicated to reduce cholesterol and triclygerides in the blood. High levels of these fats are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), vascular disease, heart attack, blood vessel blockage or chest pain, heart disease and plaques that build up in the arteries.

 

How It Works

Lovastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (also known as a statin) used in combination with a low cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your blood. It may also be used in certain adolescent patients aged 10 to 17 years who have a genetically caused cholesterol problem. 

 

Dosage

Tablets (10cmg, or 20 mg) lovastatin

 

The usual recommended starting dose is 20mg once a day given with the evening meal. The recommended dosage of lovastatin is 10-80mg/day in single or two divided doses. You should not take more than the maximum recommended dose of 80mg/day. 

 

Some other cholesterol medications should not be taken at the same time as Mevacor. Mevacor should be used in conjunction with a reduced cholesterol diet and exercise.

 

Precautions

Mevacor is contraindicated if you are hypersensitive to lovastatin, or any of the other components of Mevacor. Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you have a history of hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, reduced liver function, severe kidney disease, reduced kidney function, hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid gland), diabetes, muscle problems, alcohol use or gallbladder disease. If you have a history of any of the above mentioned conditions you may not be able to take Mevacor or you may require a reduced dosage regimen, confer with your doctor.

 

If you are being treated for high cholesterol or high triclygerides levels, keep using this medication even if you feel fine. High cholesterol or high triclygerides do not have external symptoms. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication. Always consult your doctor about gradually ending treatment or switching medication.

 

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking lovastatin. Alcohol can raise triglyceride levels, and may also damage your liver while you are taking this medication. Mevacor may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or perform dangerous tasks until you know how you react. Alcohol may also increase the risk of liver disease. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while using this medication.

 

If you are having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using Mevacor as well as about any other products you use, prescription, nonprescription and/or herbal products.

 

Do not use this medication if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant contact your doctor immediately. It is recommended that women of childbearing age use effective birth control measures while taking this medicine since lovastatin may cause fetal harm. It is unknown if this medication is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast feed while taking this medicine.

 

For optimal results, use this medication along with a low saturated fat/low cholesterol diet, in addition to exercise, and weight control. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your risk of heart disease. It may take up to 2 weeks before your cholesterol levels improve.

Drug Interactions

Consult a doctor before taking Mevacor if you are taking any of the following: gemfibrozil, HIV protease inhibitors (such as ritonavir, lopinavir, or nelfinavir), azole antifungals (such as itraconazole or ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, or troleandomycin), telithromycin, nefazodone, or other drugs that may be harmful to the kidneys (such as cyclosporine, or aminoglycosides including NSAIDs, ibuprofen, vancomycin, etc).

 

Monitoring of your condition may be needed if you are taking amiodarone, blood thinners (such as warfarin), bosentan, cyclosporine, danazol, diltiazem, fluconazole, imatinib, high doses of niacin (1 gram or more per day), fibrates (such as clofibrate or lovastatin), verapamil, dalfopristin, quinupristin, voriconazole or St. John's wort. Do not start or stop any medicine without your doctor or pharmacist approval. 

 

Before using this Mevacor, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Mevacor works or may cause other unforeseen complications.

 

Adverse/Side Effects

Mevacor may cause the following minor side effects: mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, constipation or diarrhea.

 

Mevacor may infrequently cause the following serious side effects: muscle pain, tenderness, weakness with fever, flu symptoms, liver problems or dark colored urine. If you experience any of these side effects contact you doctor immediately.

 

lovastatin has been associated with a rare but serious side effect on the muscular system. Contact your doctor at once if you have unusual muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if accompanied by fever or flu-like feeling. This is also likely if you taking other "statins" (such as atorvastatin or pravastatin) to lower your cholesterol.

 

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.

 

Overdose

If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
