Chemical Name
Ethambutol

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: ethambutol

Non-Active Ingredients: Gelatin, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Magnesium Stearate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sorbitol, Stearic Acid, Sucrose, Titanium Dioxide and other ingredients.

Indications
Combutol is indicated for the treatment of pulmanary tuburculosis and active tuberculosis, in particular M. tuberculosis resistant to Isoniazid or Rifampin. It is also used when a patient is intolerant to other drugs. Its use alone to treat tuberculosis may result in the rapid development of resistance therefore it is usually given in combination with other drugs.

How It Works
Ethambutol is an antibiotic. It prevents growth of the tuberculous bacteria in the body.

Dosage
Tablets (400 mg)
In patients who have not received previous anti-tuberculosis therapy, Ethambutol dosage should be given at 15 mg/kg (7 mg/lb) according to body weight. This usually translates to between 1 and 4 pills daily taken as a single oral dose every 24 hours.

In patients who have received previous anti-tuberculosis therapy, Ethambutol dosage should be given at 25 mg/kg (11 mg/lb) according to body weight. This usually translates to between 2 and 6 pills daily taken as a single oral dose every 24 hours. After 60 days of treatment decrease the dose to 15 mg/kg (7mg/ lb) according to body weight, and administer as a single oral dose every 24 hours.

The risk of treatment failure and drug-resistant organisms can be life-threatening and may result in other serious health risks. It is important that patients adhere to their dosage schedule for the full duration of treatment. Other anti-tuberculosis drugs such as isoniazid and streptomycin are often recommended for concurrent administration.

Precautions
Combutol is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to ethambutol. Make sure your doctor knows your medical history, especially if you have any history of kidney disease, gouty arthritis, liver disease, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), eye problems (such as optic neuritis, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy) or diabetes mellitus. If you suffer from any of these conditions then you may not be able to take Combutol or you may require special dosage instructions. If you have diabetes, Ethambutol may make it harder to control your blood sugar level. Check your blood sugar regularly and tell your doctor immediately if you persistently have symptoms of low blood sugar, such as shakiness, unusual sweating or unusual hunger.

Ethambutol may have adverse effects on vision, especially in patients with visual defects such as cataracts, recurrent inflammatory conditions of the eye, optic neuritis, and diabetic retinopathy. Patients should be evaluated regularly to insure that no decrease in vision is occurring. Ethambutol can cause permanent vision damage, vision loss, or color blindness.

You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to Ethambutol or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Combutol. If you are having surgery tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use, prescription, nonprescription and/or herbal.

This drug should not be used in children under 13 years of age unless the TB organisms are resistant to primary therapy and systemic dissemination of the disease, or if there are other life-threatening complications of tuberculosis. Consult a doctor before administering this drug to children.

Combutol may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform dangerous tasks until you know how you react. Alcohol may also increase the risk of liver disease or mental/mood changes. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while using this medication.

Combutol may pass into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby, consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

Take all of the Ethambutol that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may clear up before the infection is completely treated.

If you are taking Ethambutol in high doses or for an extended period of time, you should get monthly eye exams, and report any changes in visions to a doctor immediately. You should also immediately discontinue use of Ethambutol, as permanent eye damage may result. Ethambutol may cause decreases in visual acuity, including irreversible blindness, which appear to be due to optic neuritis. The symptoms of optic neuritis or retrobulbar neuritis caused by Ethambutol therapy include: decreased visual acuity, color blindness, scotoma, and/or visual defect.
