Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Omnicef if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of any known: kidney disease, stomach/intestinal disease (e.g., colitis). Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillin). A penicillin allergy means there is an increased possibility of allergic reaction to other antibiotics. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to cefpodoxime, or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceftin, Cefzil, Keflex, Vantin, and others.

Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Cefpodoxime will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially other antibiotics, anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin (Coumadin), probenecid (Benemid), and vitamins you may be taking. If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking cefpodoxime. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Cefpodoxime passes into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Omnicef if you are taking any sort of antacid, iron supplement, or even if you are eating foods high in iron: Avoid antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, as they will interfere with the absorption of cefdinir. If you need to be taking antacids it is recommended to take them at least 2 hours before or after the antacid. Iron supplements, as well as multivitamins that contain iron, interfere with the absorption of cefdinir. If you need to be taking iron it is recommended to take it at least 2 hours before or after the Omnicef. This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with cefpodoxime. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, antacids, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.
