Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Phenpxymethylpenicillin

Non-Active Ingredients: dibasic calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium citrate.

Indications

Penicillin V
Pneumococcal infections. Mild to moderately severe infections of the respiratory tract. Staphylococcal infections. Mild infections of the skin and soft tissues. Fusospirochetosis, Vincent's angina, trench mouth, pharyngitis, mild to moderately severe infections of the oropharynx, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and soft tissue and skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It also is used for preventing the recurrence of rheumatic fever and chorea.

In addition it is also used against, actinomycosis caused by actinomyces species, anthrax caused by B. anthracis, bronchitis, acute otitis media, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, erysipelas caused by susceptible strains of group a streptococci, erysipeloid (including endocarditis and septicemia) caused by E. rhusiopathiae, acute, necrotizing, ulcerative gingivitis caused by anaerobes and spirochetes, P. multocida infections, rat-bite fever caused by S. moniliformis or S. minor, scarlet fever caused by group A streptococci, and Lyme disease caused by B. burgdorferi.

How it works
Penicillin V are bactericidal agents, which act against penicillin-susceptible microorganisms during the stage of active multiplication.  They act by inhibiting biosynthesis of cell-wall mucopeptide. It is not active against the penicillinase-producing bacteria, which include many strains of staphylococci.

Dosage
Tablets (250 mg)

Streptococcal infections:
Initial dosage for mild to moderately severe infections of the upper respiratory tract, including scarlet fever and erysipelas: 125 to 250 every 6 to 8 hours for 10 days.

Pneumococcal infections: mild to moderately severe infections of the respiratory tract, including otitis media: 250 to 500 mg every 6 to 8 hours.

Fusospirochetosis (Vincent's infection) of the oropharynx. Mild to moderately severe infections: 250 to 500 mg every 6 to 8 hours.

Precautions

Severe pneumonia, empyema, bacteremia, pericarditis, meningitis and septic arthritis should not be treated with oral penicillin during the acute stage. Serious fatal anaphylactic and hypersensitivity reactions have occurred. It is very important to know if you are allergic to penicillin before taking such a medication.

Serious anaphylactic reactions require immediate emergency treatment with epinephrine. Oxygen, intravenous steroids, and airway management, including intubation, should also be administered as indicated.

Clostridium difficile type diarrhea has occurred. And may cause CDAD which will result in diarrhea, colitis, and bleeding. C. difficile produces toxins that can prove fatal. And may require surgery.

Oral administration should not occur in patients with serious illness that are experiencing vomiting, bloating, cardiospasm, or involuntary muscles contractions, particularly in the gastro-intestinal tract.

For streptococcal infections, therapy must be sufficient to eliminate the organism completely (10 day minimum). Long term use of antibiotics may promote other organisms to flourish such as fungi, if super-infection occurs appropriate measures ought to be taken.

This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Penicillin V, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Penicillin V may pass into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to Phenoxymethyl Penicillin or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Penicillin V.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Penicillin V, if you are taking: Probenecid (Benemid) which causes an increase in the level of penicillin in the blood by reducing the elimination of penicillin by the kidneys, oral contraceptives, Aminoglycosides, Chloramphenicol, Erythromycin, or Tetracycline.

Before using Penicillin V, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Penicillin V works or may cause other unforeseen complications.

Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that Penicillin V causes the following minor side effects: nausea, vomiting, stomach distress, diarrhea, and black hairy tongue. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.

Infrequent side effects: inflammation of outermost layer of skin, anemia caused by the break down of red blood cells, hives, low level of white blood cells, low platelet count, nerve malfunction, or kidney disease. These reactions may be caused by excessively high doses of penicillin.

If any of these side effects become bothersome, seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help, if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face, tongue or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.

Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store at 20 to 25C (68 to 77F) away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
