Principen, ampicillinChemical Namesampicillin Ingredients Active ingredients: ampicillin Non-active ingredients: magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose. Indications Ampicillin is indicated in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, including infections of the respiratory tract, throat, gastrointestinal tract, genitals, and urinary tract. How It Works Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. When unwanted bacteria have infected the body, the presence of amoxicillin can disrupt the bacterial cell walls, eventually causing cell death, yet leaving the surrounding non-bacterial cells unharmed. Dosage Available caplet sizes: 250 mg, 500 mg Ampicillin is taken orally, either one hour before or two hours after a meal. For most infections, the standard dosage is from 250 to 500 mg four times daily for one to two weeks. For gonorrhea, a single 3.5 gram dose will suffice. Consult a doctor before taking Principen if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have (or have a history of) kidney disease, liver disease, colitis or mononucleosis. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Principen if you are taking probenecid, allopurinol, or other antibiotics.
