Abilify, aripiprazoleChemical NamesActive Ingredients: Aripiprazole
Non-Active Ingredients: Corn starch, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.
Indications
This medication is used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (for both pediatric patients 10-17 and adults), major depression, autism and cocaine dependency.
How It Works
Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic and antidepressant. Aripiprazole works by acting on various receptors in the brain, especially dopamine receptors and serotonin (5HT) receptors. Since psychotic illness is considered to be caused by disturbances in the activity of neurotransmitters (mainly dopamine), aripiprazole attempts to stabilize dopamine activity in the brain.
