Atarax, hydroxyzineChemical Nameshydroxyzine Ingredients Active Ingredients: hydroxyzine Non-Active Ingredients: anhydrous lactose, colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, FD&C Yellow No. 6, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80 and titanium dioxide. Indications Hydroxyzine is used for the relief of pruritus (itching) caused by various allergic conditions. Hydroxyzine is also used for treating anxiety and tension, and inducing sedation prior to or after anesthesia. How It Works Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine with anticholinergic (drying) and sedative properties that is used to treat allergic reactions. The body releases histamine during several types of allergic reactions and--to a lesser extent--during some viral infections, such as the common cold. When histamine binds to its receptors on cells, it causes the cells to release chemical messengers that lead to sneezing, itching, and increased mucus production. Antihistamines, binds to the histamine receptors, but when they bind to the receptors they do not stimulate the cells to release chemical messengers. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 10 mg, 25 mg Adults The usual dose for treating anxiety is 50 to 100 milligrams 4 times per day. For allergies, 25 mg three times daily is standard. As a sedative, 50 to 100 milligrams once will suffice. Children under Age 6 The total dose for anxiety is 50 milligrams daily divided into several smaller doses. For allergies, 25 mg twice daily is standard. Children over Age 6 The total dose for anxiety is 50 to 100 milligrams daily divided into several smaller doses.
