Buspar, buspirone

Chemical Names
Buspirone

Ingredients
Active: buspirone hydrochloride
Inactive: colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium starch glycolate

Indications
Buspirone is a medication that is used for the treatment of anxiety and depression.

How It Works
Buspirone’s mechanism of action is not clearly understood but may involve effects on neurotransmitters, chemicals that nerves use to communicate with one another. Serotonin and dopamine are two of these neurotransmitters. Buspirone may work by stimulating serotonin type 1A receptors on nerves, thereby altering the chemical messages that nerves receive. It also has minor effects on dopamine receptors but this does not contribute much to its action.

Dosage
The usual starting adult dose is 10-15 mg daily in 2 or 3 divided doses. The dose may be increased by 5 mg every 2 to 4 days until an effective dose is found. The maximum adult dose is 60 mg daily, but most patients respond to 15-30 mg daily in 2 or 3 divided doses. You should take BuSpar (buspirone hydrochloride) consistently, either always with or always without food.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Buspar if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have a hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of psychosis, kidney disease, liver disease, or alcoholism.

BuSpar has no established antipsychotic activity and should not be employed in lieu of appropriate antipsychotic treatment.

Central nervous system effects in any individual may not be predictable. Therefore, patients should be cautioned about operating an automobile or using complex machinery on this medication.

The syndrome of withdrawal from sedative/hypnotic/anxiolytic drugs can appear as any combination of irritability, anxiety, agitation, insomnia, tremor, abdominal cramps, muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating, flu-like symptoms without fever, and occasionally, even as seizures. Consult a doctor before stopping administration.

Buspirone can bind to central dopamine receptors, and  a question has been raised about its potential to cause acute and chronic changes in dopamine-mediated neurological function (eg, dystonia, pseudo-parkinsonism, akathisia, and tardive dyskinesia).

Please inform your physician if you are pregnant, or if you are planning to become pregnant, or if you become pregnant while you are taking BuSpar.  Inform your physician if you are breast-feeding an infant.
