Eskalith: benzyl alcohol, cetylpyridinium chloride, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, and trace amounts of other inactive ingredients.

Eskalith CR: alginic acid, gelatin, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, and sodium starch glycolate.

Indications
Eskalith (lithium) is used to treat the episodes of manic depression and other manic symptoms. Manic symptoms include hyperactivity, rushed speech, poor judgment, a reduced need for sleep, aggression, and anger. Lithium also helps to prevent or lessen the intensity of manic episodes.

How It Works
Eskalith affects the flow of sodium through nerve and muscle tissue and cellular tissue in the body. Sodium is responsible for excitation or mania.

Dosage
Tablets

Eskalith (300 mg), Eskalith CR (400 mg, 450 mg) The recommended dosage of Eskalith depends on the condition being treated, for acute attacks of manic depression or other manic attacks the dosage is usually around 1,800 mg per day in divided doses, (3 or 4 doses per day).

If taking a maintenance dose to prevent manic flair ups, the controlled release formula is recommended, taken twice per day.

Precautions
You should not take Eskalith if you are allergic to lithium, or any of the other ingredients contained in it. If you do experience an allergic reaction consult a medical professional immediately. Symptoms of allergic reaction includes, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. Make sure to tell your doctor your entire medical history and about any other medical problems you may have before taking Eskalith. The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of lithium. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any of the following problems: brain disease; schizophrenia as you may be especially sensitive to lithium and mental effects (such as increased confusion) may occur; diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes) as lithium may increase the blood levels of insulin, therefore the dose of insulin you need to take may change; difficult urination; infection (severe, occurring with fever, prolonged sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting); Kidney disease as higher blood levels of lithium may occur increasing the chance of serious side effects; epilepsy; goiter or other thyroid disease; heart disease; Parkinson's disease; psoriasis as lithium may make the condition worse; or Leukemia (history of) 
as lithium may cause the leukemia to occur again. If you suffer from any of these illnesses you may not be able to take Eskalith or may require a tailored dosage. Call your doctor at once if you have any early signs of lithium toxicity, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, muscle weakness, tremor, lack of coordination, blurred vision, or ringing in your ears. If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking lithium. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet it must be swallowed whole to achieve its proper effect. Make sure to drink extra fluids to keep from getting dehydrated while you are taking lithium. Tell your doctor if you have been sweating excessively, or if you are sick with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. Also be careful not to becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough. Lithium can cause side effects that may impair your judgement or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Consult a doctor before taking Eskalith if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The effects of Eskalith on an unborn baby or nursing infant can be dangerous and you should not be taking this medication at all if you are pregnant or if you suspect you may get pregnant. Drug Interactions

Adverse/Side Effects
You may experience some of these common and minor side effects: mild tremor of the hands, weakness, lack of coordination, mild nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain or upset, thinning or drying of the hair or itching skin. If these symptoms become bothersome or persist you should contact a doctor.

If you experience these less common but serious side effects you should contact your doctor immediately: extreme thirst, urinating more or less than usual, weakness, fever, feeling restless or confused, eye pain and vision problems, restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck, pain, cold feeling, or discoloration in your fingers or toes, feeling light-headed, fainting, slow heart rate, hallucinations, seizure (blackout or convulsions), fever with muscle stiffness, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats or early signs of lithium toxicity, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, muscle weakness, tremor, lack of coordination, blurred vision, or ringing in your ears. If you notice any other side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of a lithium overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, muscle weakness, tremor, lack of coordination, blurred vision, or ringing in your ears.
