Indications Zoloft is used to treat major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder, OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder, painic disorder, PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. How It Works The drug is an SSRI, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It works preventing the re-absorption of the neurotransmitter serotonin, helping maintain the chemical balance in the brain and nervous system in order to mitigate the tendency toward depression. Dosage Tablets (25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg) The recommended initial dose of Zoloft is usually 50 mg for most conditions and patients. The target dosage varies depending on the patient in question and the condition being treated. Dosage should be determined and adjusted by a doctor, however there are general guidelines: Major depressive disorder: initiated at 50 mg per day, final dose in the 50 to 200 mg range. OCD: initiated at 25 mg, with a target dose in the range of 25 to 200 mg after adjustment. Panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety disorder: Initiated at 20 mg, raised to mg after one week with a final target dose in the range of 50 to 200 mg per day.
