Fansidar, sulfadoxine pyrimethamineChemical NameSulfadoxine pyrimethamine Ingredients Active Ingredients: sulfadoxine pyrimethamine Non-Active Ingredients: cornstarch, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate and talc. Indications Fansidar is used to treat malaria. Fansidar treats acute, uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in patients who are resistant to treatment with chloroquine treatments. How It Works Fansidar is an inhibitor of an enzyme known as dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Dosage Tablets (500 mg/25 mg) The recommended initial dose of Fansidar is dependent upon the weight of the individual being treated. Anyone taking Fansidar should consult with a physician to establish the most effective course of treatment. Precautions Fansidar is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Fansidar. If a skin rash appears, discontinue treatment with Fansidar immediately as it may be an indication of Stephens-Johnson syndrome. Do not take Fansidar to treat cerebral malaria, or any type of complicated malaria. Use extreme caution when administering Fansidar to patients who currently have, or have a history of impaired renal or hepatic function, anyone with folate deficiencies, or those with allergies, or bronchial asthma. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Fansidar if you are taking chloroquine, sulfonamides, or trimethropin. Before using this Fansidar, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Fansidar works or may cause other unforeseen complications. Adverse/Side Effects It is not uncommon for Fansidar to cause the following minor side effects: abdominal pains, hepatitis, diarrhea, pancreatitis, rising liver enzymes. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional. Infrequent side effects may include headache, pruritis, depression, tiredness, hallucinations, tinnitus, sleeplessness, nervousness, and apathy. If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
