Albenza, albendazole

Chemical Names
Albendazole

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: albendazole Non- active ingredients: hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium saccharin, sodium starch glycolate, and starch.

Indications
Albendazole is used to treat tapeworm infections, as well as other parasite infections caused by worms, including hydatid disease (echinococcosis), parenchymal neurocysticercosis due to active lesions caused by larval forms of the pork tapeworm, and many more.

How It Works
Albenza is a vermicidal that inhibits the uptake of glucose by the larval and adult stages of the susceptible parasites – it starves the worms where they should find a feast. The parasite is also immobilized, causing it to sit still and starve until it eventually dies.

Dosage
Albenza comes in 400 mg oral tablets.

Dosing of Albenza will vary, depending upon which parasitic infection is being treated. In young children, the tablets should be crushed or chewed and swallowed with a drink of water.

For Hydatid disease:
Patients 60 kg or greater should take 400 mg twice a day with meals. Less than 60 kg: 15 mg/day given in divded doses twice daily with meals. (max. 800mg).
Treatment should be done in 28 day cycles followed by a 14 day free interval for 3 cycles.
When administering albendazole in the pre- or post-surgical setting, optimal killing of cyst contents is achieved when 3 courses of therapy have been given.

For neurocysticerosis:
Patients greater than 60 kg should take 400 mg twice a day.
Patients with less than 60 kg should take 15 mg daily divided in two doses with meals.
Interval time is 8-30 days.
Patients being treated for neurocysticercosis should receive appropriate steroid and anticonvulsant therapy as required. Oral or intravenous corticosteroids should be considered to prevent cerebral hypertensive episodes during the first week of treatment.

Take this medication by mouth, generally twice daily with meals, or as directed by your doctor. Be sure to take other medications, if prescribed, for your condition.

For filarial infections: a single dose of 400 mg should suffice.
