Arava, leflunomideChemical NamesLeflunomide Ingredients Active Ingredients: leflunomide Non-Active Ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, povidone, starch, talc, titanium dioxide, and yellow ferric oxide (20 mg tablet only). Indications Arava is indicated in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. How It Works Arava works by suppressing the immune system – specifically, by inhibiting the synthesis of pyridimine. Since rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are caused by an overactive immune system harming the synovial joints and other tissues, a slight suppression of immune system function can reduce the disease’s symptoms. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 10 mg, 20 mg, 100 mg Arava dosage is usually started with a “loader dose” – a daily dose of one 100 mg tablet for three days. Afterwards, a maintenance dosage of 20 mg per day is standard, though if poorly tolerated, this may be lowered to 10 mg. If Arava dosage must be stopped, a regimen of cholestyramine is usually required. Consult a doctor before stopping taking Arava.
