Indications
Albuterol is used for acute asthma, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), bronchitis, cyctic fibrosis, subtypes of congenital myasthenic syndromes.
 
 
How It Works
Albuterol relaxes the smooth muscle in the lungs and opens airways to improve breathing. It is used to treat asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and to prevent exercise related asthma.
 
Dosage
Inhaler 100mcg 200MD, 100mcg 10 X 200MD
Tablets: 2mg, 4mg, 6mg
Rotahaler: 200mcg 10x30md
Solution: 5mg 15ml
 
The dose of albuterol your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including: The particular albuterol product, age, severity of asthma, other medications.
 
The usual dose for prevention of bronchospasm is 1-2 inhalations every 4-6 hours by aerosol. The dose for exercise induced bronchospasm is 2 inhalations 15 minutes prior to exercise. The usual nebulizer dose is 0.63 mg, 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg 3-4 times a day. The recommended dosing for tablets or syrup is 2 or 4 mg given 3 or 4 times daily and the dose of extended release tablets is 4 or 8 mg every 12 hours.
 
 
To treat or prevent an asthma attack, the recommended albuterol inhaler dose is two sprays or as needed between (4 to 6 hours). For preventing exercise-induced asthma, the recommended dose is two sprays 15-30 prior to exercise.
 
Children:
 
In children less than 12: 180 mcg (2 inhalations) every 4-6 hours.
Solution for children 2-12 years of age: 0.63 or 1.25 mg 3 or 4 times daily.
 
0.5% Inhalation solution for nebulization in adolescents less or equal to 12 years of age: 2.5 mg 3-4 times daily.
Conventional tablets in children 6-12 years of age: Initially, 2 mg 3 or 4 times daily. If necessary, increase dosage cautiously and gradually as tolerated to a maximum of 6 mg 4 times daily (maximum 24 mg total daily dosage)
Conventional tablets in adolescents( 12+): Initially, 2 or 4 mg 3 or 4 times daily. If necessary, increase dosage cautiously and gradually as tolerated to a maximum of 8 mg 4 times daily (maximum 32 mg total daily dosage).

Precautions
Consult a doctor about your medical history, especially of: and overactive thyroid, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes, drug allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. This drug may pass through breast milk.
 
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking albuterol if you are also taking beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol, timolol), all asthma medications, ephedrine, epinephrine, pseudoephedrine, antidepressants, MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide). It is important to read the labels carefully on all over-the-counter medications, especially those used for colds, allergies, asthma or diets as they may contain ingredients mentioned above. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
 
 
Adverse/Side Effects
Dry mouth, irritated throat, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, heartburn, loss of appetite, altered taste sensation, restlessness, anxiety, nervousness, trembling, and sweating may occur but should subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water or use saliva substitute. Inform your doctor if you experience: chest pain, pounding heartbeat, breathing difficulties. In the unlikely event you have a serious allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
 
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
 
 
Storage Instructions
Store salbutamol at temperatures below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
