Atrovent, ipratropium bromideChemical NamesIpratropium bromide Ingredients Active Ingredients: ipratropium bromide Non-Active Ingredients: HFA-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) as propellant, purified water, dehydrated alcohol, and anhydrous citric acid. Indications Atrovent is indicated as a bronchodilator for maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. How It Works The "anti-cholinergic" effect of ipratropium bromide blocks the effect of the cholinergic nerves, causing the muscles to relax and the bronchi to dilate. When inhaled, ipratropium bromide goes directly to the airways, and very little is absorbed into the body. Dosage Available inhalant dosages: 20 mcg, 40mcg The usual starting dose of Atrovent is two inhalations four times a day. Patients may take additional inhalations as required; however, the total number of inhalations should not exceed 12 in 24 hours. Precautions Consult a doctor before taking Atrovent if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of impaired liver or kidney function. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Atrovent if you are taking any other anticholinergic medications. Adverse/Side Effects The most commonly noted side effects associated with inhaled ipratropium bromide are flu-like symptoms, tremor, sleeplessness, nervousness, constipation, sore throat, chest pain, and difficulty in breathing. These side effects occur in one of every 10 to 20 persons who take ipratropium bromide. Overdose Overdose is incredibly rare, but has suspected symptoms of increased heart rate and decreased blood pressure. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Storage Instructions Ipratropium bromide should be kept at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F). Excessive humidity should be avoided. |
