How It Works Combivent dilates the airways by relaxing the muscles surrounding them. Albuterol and ipratropium work by different mechanisms, but both cause the muscles of the airways to relax. Dosage Available inhalant dosages (ipratropium/salmeterol): 20mcg/100 mcg The standard dose of Combivent inhalation Aerosol is two inhalations four times a day. Patients may take additional inhalations as required; however, the total number of inhalations should not exceed 12 in 24 hours. Shake the canister vigorously for at least 10 seconds before use. Precautions Consult a doctor before taking Combivent if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of nut allergies, belladonna allergies, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, prostate enlargement, bladder problems, seizures, thyroid problems or diabetes. Combivent inhalation aerosol can produce paradoxical bronchospasm that can be life-threatening. If it occurs, usage should be discontinued immediately and alternative therapy instituted. This product contains trichloromonofluoromethane (CFC-11), dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12) and dichlorotetrafluoroethane Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking anticholinergic agents, beta-adrenergic agents, beta blockers, diuretics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or tricyclic antidepressants. Adverse/Side Effects Side effects include: Headache, pain, influenza, chest pain, nausea, bronchitis, dyspnea, coughing, respiratory disorders, bronchospasm, pharyngitis, sinusitis, rhinitis. Rare side effects include: edema, fatigue, hypertension, dizziness, nervousness, paresthesia, tremor, dysphonia, insomnia, diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia, vomiting, arrhythmia, palpitation, tachycardia, arthralgia, angina, increased sputum, taste perversion, and urinary tract infection/dysuria. Allergic-type reactions such as skin rash, angioedema of the tongue, lips and face, urticaria (including giant urticaria), laryngospasm and anaphylactic reaction have been reported Overdose Symptoms of overdose include chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, tremors, nervousness, weakness, and dizziness.
