Ingredients
Active ingredients: Beclomethasone dipropionate
Non-active ingredients: beclomethasone dipropionate in propellant HFA-134a (1,1,1,2 tetrafluoroethane) and ethanol.
Indications
Beclomethasone is an inhaled synthetic steroid used for treating asthma. Beclomethasone dipropionate is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm.
How It Works
Beclomethasone is a naturally-occurring steroid (cortisol or hydrocortisone) produced in the adrenal glands that has potent anti-inflammatory actions. Some symptoms of asthma are caused by chronic inflammation in the airways within the lungs. When used as an inhaler, beclomethasone directly reaches the airways where it reduces inflammation.
Patients should prime QVAR by actuating into the air twice before using for the first time or if QVAR has not been used for over ten days. Avoid spraying in the eyes or face when priming QVAR. QVAR is a solution aerosol that does not require shaking. Consistent dose delivery is achieved, whether using the 40 or 80 mcg strengths, due to proportionality of the two products (i.e., two actuations of 40 mcg strength should provide a dose comparable to one actuation of the 80 mcg strength).
Qvar should be administered by the oral inhaled route in patients 5 years of age and older. Use of QVAR with a spacer device in children less than 5 years of age is not recommended

Precautions

Qvar is not a fast-acting asthma medication and cannot replace fast-acting rescue inhalers. Do not use Qvar to treat an asthma attack. Everyone taking Qvar should also have a rescue asthma medication available at all times. Let your healthcare provider know if you need to use your rescue inhaler more frequently than usual, as this may be a sign of worsening asthma.
Qvar is a steroid and may suppress the immune system. Although this is more likely to occur with oral steroids, it is still possible with inhaled steroids (such as Qvar). You may be at a higher risk for infections.
Like all steroids, Qvar may slow the growth of children and teenagers, so use cautiously.
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Qvar if you are also taking aspirin, arthritis medication, digoxin, diuretics, estrogen, ketoconazole, oral contraceptives, phenobarbitol, phenytoin, rifampin, theophylline, or any other corticosteroids.
Adverse/Side Effects
Common side effects include headache, pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat), nausea, and cough. Mild cough or wheezing due to chemical irritation may be minimized by using an inhaled bronchodilator, for example, albuterol (Ventolin), prior to beclomethasone.
Oral candidiasis or thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth and throat, occurs more frequently with higher doses. Hoarseness may occur due to chemical irritation. A spacer device attached to the inhaler and washing the mouth with water following each use of beclomethasone reduces the amount of beclomethasone in the mouth and throat, reducing the risk of thrush and hoarseness.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, immediately contact your local emergency room or local hospital.
Storage Instructions
Beclomethasone should be kept at room temperature, 15-30 C (59-86 F). Temperatures above 49 C (120 F) may cause the container to burst.
