Ovrette, norgestrelChemical NameNorgestrel Ingredients Active Ingredients: norgestrel Non-Active Ingredients: cellulose, FD&C Yellow 5, lactose, magnesium stearate, and polacrilin potassium. Indications Ovrette is used for the prevention of pregnancy. How It Works Ovrette is a progestin-only contraceptive. It works by thickening cervical mucus to limit sperm penetration, slowing the decent of ovum in the fallopian tubes and altering the endometrium. It also suppresses ovulation in 50% of patients. Dosage Tablets (0.75 mg) The recommended initial dose of Ovrette is 1 tablet of 0.7 mg to be taken daily, always at the same time, and without gaps. Precautions Ovrette is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Ovrette, or who are, or suspect they may be, pregnant. Speak to a doctor if you have the following conditions: acute liver disease, abnormal genital bleeding, liver tumors, or breast cancer. This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Ovrette, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Ovrette may pass into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding a baby. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Ovrette if you are taking drugs that induce hepatic enzyme production or anticonvulsants like phenytoin, carbamazepine or barbiturates, the antituberculosis rifampin, st. John’s wort or other herbal medications, or protease inhibitors. Before using this Ovrette, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Ovrette works or may cause other unforeseen complications. Adverse/Side Effects It is not uncommon for Ovrette to cause the following minor side effects: weight change, vomiting, stroke, rash, nausea, mood disturbances and fatigue. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome, contact your doctor or health-care professional. Infrequent side effects may include HDL disease, leg cramps, abdominal pain, acne, alopecia. Rare side effects may also include ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, menstrual irregularity, If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
