Azor, amlodipine and olmesartan

Chemical Names
amlodipine/olmesartan medoxomil

Ingredients
Active ingredients: amlodipine,olmesartan medoxomil
Non-active ingredients: silicified microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, and magnesium stearate

Indications
Azor is a prescription drug used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). Azor contains two different active ingredients in one tablet, namely amlodipine and olmesartan medoxomil.

How It Works

Azor is a combination of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist olmesartan, and the calcium channel blocker amlodipine. The amlodipine component of Azor inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, and the olmesartan medoxomil component of Azor blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II.

Dosage
Oral tablets (5mg/20mg, amlodipine/olmesartan)

Initial dosage is 5/20 mg daily for 1 to 2 weeks. Titration can be done as needed up to a maximum of 10/40 mg once daily.

Dosage may be increased after 2 weeks to a maximum dose of 10/40 mg once daily, usually by increasing one component at a time. However, both components can be raised simultaneously to achieve more rapid control.

Severe hepatic impairment: starting amlodipine or adding amlodipine at 2.5 mg n hepatically impaired patients is recommended. The lowest dose of Azor is 5/20 mg; initial therapy with Azor is not recommended in hepatically impaired patients.

Precautions
When pregnancy is detected, discontinue Azor as soon as possible. When used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters, drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. Please speak with your doctor before taking this medication.

Patients with an activated rennin-angiotensin system (such as those being treated with high doses of diuretics) may be vulnerable.

Exercise caution when administered in patients with severe aortic stenosis.

Patients, particularly those with severe obstructive coronary artery disease, may develop an increased frequency, duration or severity of angina or acute myocardial infarction upon starting calcium channel blocker therapy or at the time of dosage increase. In general, calcium channel blockers should be used with caution in patients with heart failure.

Extreme caution should be used with patients with severe hepatic impairment.
