How It Works Benicar HCT is a prodrug that reduces vasoconstriction and it also contains a diuretic. The olmesartan in Benicar HCT works by inhibiting an enzyme that regulates vasoconstriction. The hydrochlorothiazide increases the excretion of sodium and chloride and also has the effect of reducing plasma volume. The two actions work together to reduce blood pressure.
