Clorpres, CombipresChemical NamesClonidine and Chlorthalidone Ingredients Active Ingredients: Clonidine hydrochloride (a centrally acting anti-hypertensive agent) and chlorthalidone (a diuretic) Non-Active Ingredients: ammonium chloride, colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium (Type A), magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, D&C yellow #10. Indications Clorpres is indicated in the treatment of high blood pressure, it can also be used to treat fluid retention. How It Works Clorpres works by relaxing blood vessels allowing blood to flow more easily, allowing the heart muscle to relax. Chlorthalidone is a diuretic that helps rid the body of extra fluids, helping relax blood vessels. The overall effect lowers blood pressure, which helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Dosage Oral tablet: (100 mcg 15 mg, clonidine hydrochloride/chlorthalidone). Tablet administered once or twice daily can be used to administer a minimum of 0.1 mg Clonidine hydrochloride and 15 mg Chlorthalidone to a maximum of 0.6 mg Clonidine hydrochloride and 30 mg Chlorthalidone. Initial dosage should be started at one pill/day and increased if needed. Precautions As with all antihypertensive therapy, Clonidine hydrochloride should be used with caution. Especially in patients with a history of asthma, blood circulation problems (Raynaud's disease, stroke), depression, gout, heart disease (irregular heartbeat, recent heart attack, chest pain, heart failure), kidney disease, liver disease, or systemic lupus erythematosus. Patients should not discontinue therapy without consulting their doctor. Stopping Clonidine treatment may result in symptoms such as nervousness, agitation and headache, accompanied or followed by a rise in blood pressure and elevated catecholamine concentrations in plasma. Consult a doctor before taking Clorpres especially if you are pregnant or nursing. Clonidine hydrochloride is excreted in human milk. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants a doctor should weigh the benefits of the treatment against the risks. Clorpres may cause drowsiness, and therefore patients should make sure this is not the case before operating heavy machinery or driving. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication. This medication is removed by the kidneys. The elderly may be at greater risk for side effects while using this drug, especially dehydration if kidney function is reduced.
