Midamor, amiloride

Chemical Names
Amiloride

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: amiloride
Non-Active Ingredients: calcium phosphate, D&C Yellow 10, iron oxide, lactose, magnesium stearate and starch.

Indications
Midamor, in conjunction with thiazide diuretics or other kaliuretic-diuretic agents, is indicated in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), congestive heart failure, and hypokalemia (potassium deficiency). Midamor should only be used alone when persistent hypokalemia has been documented, and only with very careful titration of the dose and monitoring of the effects.

How It Works
Amiloride is a potassium-sparing diuretic that encourages the release of salt and water from the bloodstream, but without depleting potassium levels.

Dosage
Available tablet sizes: 5 mg

The standard dosage is one 5 mg tablet daily, in addition to the usual dosage of a kaliuretic diuretic such as a thiazide.  If necessary, this dosage may be increased to 10 mg daily, under careful screening.  If necessary, the dosage may be increased up to 20 mg daily.

Midamor should be taken with food to minimize nausea.

If Midamor must be taken alone, a single daily dose of 5 mg is the standard starting dosage. This may be increased to 10 mg, or even up to 20 mg daily, though the effectiveness of doses larger than 10 mg daily has not been established. Careful monitoring of serum electrolyte levels should be maintained throughout a stand-alone Midamor regimen.

In general, Midamor should not be taken alone, but in conjunction with a diuretic of the thiazide class. Used by itself, Midamor (and other potassium-sparing diuretics) poses an increased risk of hyperkalemia (potassium overabundancy).  Consult a doctor for the correct combination and dosage of diuretics you should be taking.

Do not stop taking this drug without a doctor’s consent.
