Plendil, felodipine

Chemical Name
Felodipine

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Felodipine

Non-Active Ingredients: cellulose, red and yellow oxide, lactose, polyethylene glycol, sodium stearyl fumarate, titanium dioxide, and other ingredients.

Indications
Plendil is used to treat hypertension, high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure.

How It Works
Felodipine is a calcium channel blocker. Felodipine acts by relaxing (widening) blood vessels (veins and arteries), which reduces the heart's workload and makes it easier to pump blood throughout the body.

Dosage
Tablets (2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg)
The usual initial dosage of Felodipine is 5 mg per day administered in a single dose. Based on the patient's reaction, the dose can either be reduced to 2.5 mg or raised to 10 mg. Dosage changes should occur no less then every two weeks.

Precautions
Plendil is contraindicated in patients with liver disease or another disease of the heart or blood vessels such as sick sinus syndrome, aortic stenosis, heart failure, low blood pressure, or coronary artery disease. If you suffer from any of these conditions you may not be able to take Plendil or you may require a reduced dosage.

Before taking Plendil, tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease (or are on dialysis), liver disease, congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is recommended. Rarely, the swelling of the gums may become a side effect from treatment with Felodipine. Proper oral hygiene will help prevent swelling and decay, minimizing these symptoms.

Taking this medication with other conditons, or reactions to conditions, may excessively lower your blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you experinec any of the following conditions: vomiting, diarrhea, heavy sweating, heart disease, dialysis. Your blood pressure may also lower if you are on a low-salt diet or other diuretics. Make sure to tell your doctor about any "special" diets or medications you might be on. Follow your doctor's instructions about amount of liquids you should drink as well as the types of liquids you should drink while taking Plendil. Tell your doctor if you are prone to diarrhea or vomiting or if you have a condition causing either of these.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, continue using this medication even if you feel fine. High blood pressure does not have external symptoms. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication, always consult your doctor about gradually ending treatment or switching medication.

Avoid losing excess amounts of water, becoming overheated, dehydrated, exercising excessively or in hot weather. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough. All patients should be cautioned that excessive sweating and dehydration may lead to a fall in blood pressure because of the decrease in fluid volume. Other causes of volume depletion such as vomiting or diarrhea may also lead to a fall in blood pressure, patients should be advised to consult with their physician.

Avoid getting up too fast, which may make you feel dizzy. Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of Plendil.

This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby and has been known to cause birth defects. Before taking Plendil, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Plendil passes into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. You should not be breast feeding on this medication.
