Indications Tenoretic is indicated in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). How It Works Tenoretic is a combination antihypertensive that contains atenolol and chlorthalidone. Atenolol is a beta-blocker that blocks the action of certain chemicals, including epinephrine, on your heart. This has the effect of relaxing heart rate and the force of contraction of heart muscles, lowering blood pressure and reducing the heart’s stress and need for oxygen. Chlorthalidone is a diuretic that promotes the expulsion of water from the bloodstream. This lowers overall blood volume, lowering the pressure of blood in the vessels. Dosage Available tablet sizes (atenolol/chlorthalidone): 50mg/12.5mg, 100mg/25mg The usual initial Tenoretic dosage is one 50mg/12.5mg tablet daily. If you are due to undergo surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Tenoretic. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Tenoretic if you are taking mibefradil, digitalis, reserpine, disopyramide, lithium, clonidine, thiazide antidepressants, alpha-blockers, antidiabetic medications, calcium channel blockers, epinephrine, anaesthetics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (including ibuprofen), potassium supplements, antacids, other heart medications, other diuretics, or any other high blood pressure medication. Adverse/Side Effects Common initial side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, unusual dreams, leg pain, gastric irritation, or vision problems. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This drug may reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. Smoking may amplify this effect. Dress warmly and do not smoke or use tobacco. More serious side effects include slow heartbeat, decreased sexual ability, reversible hair loss, mental/mood changes, joint changes, butterfly-shaped rash on the nose and cheeks, trouble breathing, cough, unexplained or sudden weight gain, increased thirst, increased urination, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever. Contact your doctor if any of these manifest. Tenoretic should be used carefully in patients with impaired hepatic function or progressive liver disease, as minor alterations in fluid and electrolyte levels can lead to hepatic coma in such cases. In patients with renal disease, thiazides may precipitate azotemia (high bodily nitrogen levels). Overdose Symptoms of overdose may include slowed heartbeat, dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, weakness, fainting, or severe dehydration.
