Tenormin, atenolol

Chemical Names
Atenolol

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: atenolol
Non-Active Ingredients: Magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, sodium starch glycolate.

Indications
Tenormin is indicated in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris due to coronary atherosclerosis, and acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

How It Works
Atenolol is a beta-blocker that blocks the action of certain chemicals, including epinephrine, on your heart. This has the effect of relaxing heart rate and the force of contraction of heart muscles, lowering blood pressure and reducing the heart’s stress and need for oxygen.

Dosage
Available tablet sizes: 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg

The initial dose of Tenormin in the treatment of hypertension and angina is 50 mg given as one tablet a day either alone or added to diuretic therapy. The full effect of this dose will usually be seen within one to two weeks. If an optimal response is not achieved, the dosage should be increased to Tenormin 100 mg given as one tablet a day. Some angina patients may require single daily doses of 200 mg, but increasing the dosage beyond 100 mg a day is unlikely to produce any further benefit in the treatment of hypertension.

In the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, Tenormin must be applied intravenously. This is an incredibly dangerous procedure used to prevent fatal complications in the postlude of a cardiac episode, and should only be performed by medical professionals.

Tenormin is excreted by the kidneys; consequently dosage should be adjusted in cases of severe impairment of renal function. In general, dose selection for an elderly patient should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range, reflecting greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, and of concomitant disease or other drug therapy. Patients so compromised should take no more than 50 or 25 mg daily, depending on the severity of renal impairment.

Precautions
Consult a doctor before taking Tenormin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you have or have a history of sinus bradycardia, atrioventricular block, cardiogenic shock, heart failure, pheochromocytoma, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, blood circulation disorders, skin conditions, mood/mental disorders, or myasthenia gravis.

If you are due to have surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Tenormin.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Tenormin if you are taking mibefradil, alpha-blockers, antidiabetic medications, calcium channel blockers, epinephrine, anaesthetics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (including ibuprofen), potassium supplements, antacids, other heart medications, or any other high blood pressure medication.

Adverse/Side Effects
Common initial side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, unusual dreams, leg pain, or vision problems. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

This drug may reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. Smoking may amplify this effect. Dress warmly and do not smoke or use tobacco.

More serious side effects include slow heartbeat, decreased sexual ability, reversible hair loss, mental/mood changes, joint changes, butterfly-shaped rash on the nose and cheeks, trouble breathing, cough, unexplained or sudden weight gain, increased thirst, increased urination, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever. Contact your doctor if any of these manifest.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include slowed heartbeat, dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, weakness, or fainting. If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
