Zetia, ezetimibeChemical NameEzetimibe Ingredients Active Ingredients: Ezetimibe Non-Active Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Indications Zetia is indicated in the reduction of cholesterol and triclygerides levels in the blood. High levels of these fats are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), vascular disease, plaques that builds up in the arteries, and heart disease. How It Works Ezetimibe is in a class of lipid-lowering compounds, it works by reducing the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body in the intestines. Ezetimibe is used to treat high cholesterol often in combination with other cholesterol lowering medications. Ezetimibe combined with a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat will help reduce elevated levels of: Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C), Total Cholesterol (Total-C), Triglycerides, and apolipoprotein (Apo B). Dosage Tablets (10 mg) The usual dosage of Zetia is one tablet administered once per day as an oral dose. Some other cholesterol medications should not be taken at the same time as Zetia. Do not take cholestyramine, colestipol, or colesevelam at the same time as Zetia, wait at least 4 hours after taking any of these before you take Zetia or you can take Zetia 2 hours before taking these other medicines. Precautions Zetia is contraindicated if you are hypersensitive to ezetimibe or any of the other components of Zetia. Do not take this medication if you have a history of hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, or severe kidney disease. You should talk to you doctor if you have reduced kidney function, reduced liver function, hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid gland), diabetes, or gallbladder disease. If you have a history of any of the above mentioned conditions you may not be able to take Zetia or you may require a reduced dosage regimen, confer with your doctor. You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to ezetimibe, similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients in Zetia. If you are going to have surgery tell your doctor or dentist that you are using Zetia as well as about any other products you use, prescription, nonprescription and/or herbal products. If you are being treated for high cholesterol or high triclygerides levels, keep using this medication, even if you feel fine. High cholesterol or high triclygerides do not have external symptoms. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication, always consult your doctor about gradually ending treatment or switching medication. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking ezetimibe. Alcohol can raise triglyceride levels, and may also damage your liver while you are taking this medication. Zetia may also cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform dangerous tasks until you know how you react. Alcohol may also increase the risk of liver disease. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while using this medication. This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby and you should not take this medication before telling your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Zetia may pass into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby, consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby. For optimal results, use this medication along with a low saturated fat/low cholesterol diet, in addition to exercise, and weight control. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional. Zetia may infrequently cause gallstones and or liver problems. If you experience any of these less common but serious side effects contact you doctor immediately: persistent nausea/vomiting, severe stomach pain, chest pain, intestinal pain, nausea, dark urine, yellowing eyes or skin, unusual weakness, or fever, decreased pancreatitis function (severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate), fever, sore throat, and or headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash. Contact your doctor immediately if these rare but very serious side effects occur: black/tarry stool, easy bleeding/bruising, vomiting (looking like coffee grounds), change in amount of urine, signs of infection (fever, persistent sore throat), chest pain, pain/redness/swelling of arms or legs. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
