Indications Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) is used in the treatment of a variety of cancers: malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma (bone marrow), leukemia, mycosis fungoides (skin), neuroblastoma (nerves), retinoblastoma (eye), blood cancer, lymph system cancer, ovarian cancer and breast cancer. This medication may also be used for various conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and to prevent organ transplant rejection. It has also been used to treat a certain type of kidney disease in children after other treatments have not worked. Cyclophosphamide also works by decreasing your immune system's response to various diseases. Dosage If the only drug you are using as a cancer treatment is Cytoxan the initial course is usually in the range of 1 to 5 mg/kg/day for both initial and maintenance dosing. When Cytoxan is included in a combined cytotoxic drug treatment program, it may be necessary to reduce the dose of Cytoxan as well as that of the other drugs. During treatment with Cytoxan you should not receive any vaccines especially vaccines with live or dormant viruses. Cytoxan weakens the body’s immune system and a doctor may recommend other drugs to ward off any infections or bacterias. Adverse/Side Effects Cytoxan will most probably cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach ache, diarrhea, or darkening of the skin/nails may occur. Nausea and vomiting can be severe. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe something to help relieve nausea and vomiting. Eating several small meals or limiting activity may help lessen some of these effects. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist. Temporary hair loss may occur. Hair growth should return after treatment has ended. This medication rarely causes serious effects on the heart, even when used in high doses, or in combination with radiation treatment or certain other chemotherapy drugs (doxorubicin). Seek immediate medical attention if you develop: chest pain, jaw/left arm pain, trouble breathing, irregular heartbeat.This medication can lower the body's ability to fight an infection. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of an infection such as fever, chills sore throat etc. Cyclophosphamide can decrease fertility in both men and women. Sterility is usually temporary but can be permanent in some cases. Consult your doctor for more details. Although cyclophosphamide is used to treat cancer, it may increase the risk of developing another form of cancer, at some point down the road. It is important to be closely monitored by your doctor during treatment. You should also see your doctor regularly after treatment is finished. Tell your doctor if you develop: unusual growths or lumps, swollen glands, unexplained or sudden weight loss, night sweats, pain in the pelvis, painful or frequent urination.
