Indications
Femara is indicated only for postmenopausal women. It may be effective for the treatment of women following breast-cancer surgery, in the prevention of relapse, or further spread.
How It Works
Femara is a non-steroidal estrogen inhibitor. As some cancers, especially breast cancer, require certain levels of estrogen in order to reproduce, the lowering of estrogen levels may slow the growth of some types of cancers.
Dosage
Tablets (2.5mg)
The recommended initial dose of Femara is 2.5mg for postmenopausal women only.
Precautions
Femara is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Femara, in women who may become pregnant, and for women who are not postmenopausal.
This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. If you are pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant, do not take Femara. Femara passes into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to letrozole or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Femara.
Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking Femara, if you are taking Tamoxifen, Cimetidine, Warfarin, or other cancer agents.
Before using this Femara, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Femara works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
Adverse/Side Effects
Femara may cause cardiac failure, heart palpitations, arterial thrombosis, increased frequency of urination, irritability, nervousness, pyrexia, vaginal discharge, dryness of skin and mucosa. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.
Less frequent side effects include blurred vision, hepatic enzymes, angioedema, anaphylactic reactions, skin rashes, and hepatits.
If any of these side effects become bothersome seek medical attention immediately.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
