Kytril, granisetronChemical NameGranisetron Ingredients Active Ingredients: Granisetron Non-Active Ingredients: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide. Indications Kytril is used to treat nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of emetogenic cancer therapy, which including high-dose cisplatin. It is used to prevent the nausea and vomiting associated with radiation, complete body irradiation and fractionated abdominal radiation. How It Works Kytril's main effect is to reduce the activity of the vagus nerve, which activates the nerves that control the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata. Dosage Tablets (1 mg) The initial dose is 2 mg once daily or 1 mg twice daily. In the 2 mg once-daily regimen, two 1 mg tablets are given up to 1 hour before chemotherapy. In the twice-daily regimen, the first 1 mg tablet is taken up to 1 hour before chemotherapy, and the second tablet 12 hours after the first. Precautions Kytril is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to ingredients in Kytril including certain heart problems, slow heartbeat, heart failure, QT prolongation or a family history of certain heart problems. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also occur if you use certain diuretic medication or if you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. It is unknown whether this medication is safe to use in children. Irregular abnormalities to the heart function have happened while on Kytril. Taking this medication after abdominal surgery will mask disruption of the normal propulsive gastrointestinal motor activity and stomach bloating caused by air. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive or use machinery. This medicine may cause harm to an unborn baby. Before taking Kytril, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Kytril may pass into breast milk and may causes harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby. You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to granisetron or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of Kytril. Drug Interactions Consult a doctor before taking Kytril, if you are taking: amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, or macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin). Before using this Kytril, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how Kytril works or may cause other unforeseen complications. Adverse/Side Effects It is common that Kytril causes the following minor side effects: diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, weakness, headache, fever, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, and anxiety.
