Indications

VePesid is used to treat small cell lung cancer, lung cancer and recurrent testicular tumors. This drug may also be used to treat certain childhood cancers that have not responded to other treatments, certain types of leukemias, lymphomas, liver cancer, ovarian cancer, esophageal cancer, and another type of lung cancer (non-small cell type).
 
How It Works
VePesid works in combination with other approved chemotherapeutic agents and acts as a first wave treatment for patients with lung cancer or recurrent testicular cancer. VePesid is an antineoplastic. It stops the tumor cells from dividing (mitosis), which prevents the spread of certain types of cancer.

Dosage
Tablets (50mg)
Injection (100mg/50ml)

The usual intravenous dose of VePesid is 50 to 100 mg/m_/day, for 1 to 5 days consecutively or 100 mg/m_, on days 1, 3 and 5. A new round of treatment can begin every 3 to 4 weeks once a patient has recovered sufficiently. Vepesid is used in combination with other drugs approved for treating a particular cancer. Dosage should be modified to take into account the other drugs that you may be taking.

The normal oral dosage (tablets) is approximately twice the IV dosage meaning 100-200 mg/m_/day, for 5 consecutive days or 200 mg/m_/day on day 1, 3, and 5. A new round of treatment can begin every 3 to 4 weeks once a patient has recovered sufficiently. Vepesid is used in combination with other drugs approved for treating a particular cancer. Dosage should be modified to take into account the other drugs that you may be taking.
 
Precautions
VePesid is contraindicated in people who have hypersensitivity to Etoposide or any other components of the drug. Make sure your doctor knows your medical history, especially if you have any history of kidney disease, bone marrow depression, an infection, a history of blood conditions or a weak immune system (from disease or from taking certain medicines). If you suffer from any of these conditions then you may not be able to take VePesid or you may require special dosage instructions.

You should consult a doctor before using this medication if you are allergic to etoposide or similar medicines, or any of the other ingredients of VePesid. While on this medication you should not receive any sort of 'live' virus vaccine. This can be very dangerous as your body is already in a weakened state and may not be able to fight off a virus.

Do not open an etoposide capsule. The medicine from a broken capsule can be harmful if it gets in your eyes, nose, mouth, or on your skin. If skin contact occurs, wash the area with soap and water. If you accidentally get this medication in your eyes, immediately rinse your eyes with plain water. If you must handle a broken capsule, do so with caution using gloves or an other object.

Etoposide may lower your bone marrow and/or the blood cells your body uses to help fight infections. This makes it easier for you to bleed or bruise from minor injuries or to get ill from being around other sick people. To assure that your blood cells do not go excessively low you should get regular blood tests. Using etoposide may increase your risk of developing other cancers, such as leukemia.

This medicine may be harm to an unborn baby and you should not take this medication while pregnant. Before taking VePesid, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

VePesid may cause drowsiness and/or dizziness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform dangerous tasks until you know how you react. Using VePesid with alcohol may increase the effects of alcohol use caution.

If using Vepesid injections, be sure to always properly dispose of your needles. Do not share this medication with anyone.

Drug Interactions
Consult a doctor before taking VePesid, if you are taking: Anticoagulants, antibiotics, aspirin, cyclosporine, glucosamine, levamisole, or St John's wort. Do not use VePesid if you have recently received a 'live' virus vaccine, and do not take a 'live' virus vaccine while on VePesid.

 Before using this VePesid, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal products, minerals and vitamins you may be taking. Other medications may affect how VePesid works or may cause other unforeseen complications.
 
VePesid is usually prescribed with other anti-cancer medications. Your doctor should be the one making the decisions as to which medications will work best for your particular condition. Always consult your doctor and make sure he is aware of your history and any other information that is needed to treat your particular condition.
 
Adverse/Side Effects
It is common that VePesid may cause some of the following minor side effects: appetite loss, mild itching, bruising, diarrhea, hair loss, increased sweating, nausea, voice changes, or vomiting. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.

If you are experiencing any of the following severe side effects you should contact your doctor immediately. Severe side effects include: chills, cough, decreased ability to fight infection, dizziness, fever, loss of consciousness, liver failure, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), seizure, fast heart rate, sore throat, sores on the mouth or lips, temporary blindness, tingling of the fingers or toes, unusual bruising or bleeding, or unusual tiredness.
 
If any of these side effects are worrisome seek medical attention immediately. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.
 
Overdose
If you suspect overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose include severe nausea and vomiting, sore throat, flu symptoms, fever, easy bruising, chills, or extreme weakness.

Storage Instructions
Store in a refrigerator between 2 - 8 C (36 - 46 F), and keep out of the reach of children and pets.
