Indications Lipitor, when taken alongside a proper diet, is clinically proven to lower high cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) and reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and chest pain in patients with heart disease or several common risk factors for heart disease. Common risk factors include family history of early heart disease, high blood pressure, age, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, and smoking. How It Works Lipitor lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood, and slightly raising your HDL cholesterol levels. In addition to this, it decreases the rate of synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. It accomplishes this by competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an important enzyme in the metabolic pathway of cholesterol in the body. Dosage Available tablet sizes: 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg Take Lipitor exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change your dose or stop Lipitor without talking to your doctor. Take Lipitor each day at any time of day at about the same time each day. Lipitor can be taken with or without food. Don't break Lipitor tablets before taking. Your doctor should start you on a low-fat diet before giving you Lipitor. Stay on this low-fat diet when you take Lipitor. Your doctor may do blood tests to check your cholesterol levels during your treatment with Lipitor. Your dose of Lipitor may be changed based on these blood test results. If you miss a dose of Lipitor, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take Lipitor if it has been more than 12 hours since you missed your last dose. Wait and take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take 2 doses of Lipitor at the same time. For Hyperlipidemia (Heterozygous Familial and Nonfamilial) and Mixed Dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Types IIa and IIb): The recommended starting dose of Lipitor is 10 or 20 mg once daily. Patients who require a large reduction in LDL-C (more than 45%) may be started at 40 mg once daily. The dosage range of Lipitor is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipitor can be administered as a single dose at any time of the day, with or without food. For Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Pediatric Patients (10-17 years of age): The recommended starting dose of Lipitor is 10 mg/day; the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg/day (doses greater than 20 mg have not been studied in this patient population). Doses should be individualized according to the recommended goal of therapy For Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia: The dosage of Lipitor in patients with homozygous FH is 10 to 80 mg daily. Tell your doctor if you have muscle aches or weakness, or drink more than 2 glasses of alcohol daily. If you are due for major surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Lipitor. Adverse/Side Effects Common side effects include: diarrhea, upset stomach, muscle and joint pain, tiredness, tendon problems. Inform your doctor if any of these persist or worsen. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms: muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, especially if you also have a fever or feel more tired than usual; allergic reactions including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat that may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing, which may require treatment right away; nausea and vomiting; brown or dark-colored urine; fatigue; yellowed skin or eyes; stomach pain; allergic skin reaction. Overdose Symptoms of Lipitor overdose are not known. If you suspect overdose, immediately contact your local emergency room or poison control.
